Dear Mr. Weinstein,
Man. What a year it has been! Time has flew by. Settling into your 11R class on the first day of junior year feels like yesterday. My how things have changed. I have built on my values and reinforced my beliefs. I feel fully satisfied with myself and I think that has translated into my writing. I write about things I am passionate about and continue to set new goals for myself both in writing and in life. As a result, I have grown as a human being and I couldn’t be more excited for the future. This class has taught me to appreciate life, art, and most importantly--myself.
I was recommended for 12 AP this year but as I took 5 AP’s this year, I realized that I wanted it to make it out alive. However, I wanted a substitute that would leave me satisfied, occupied (sometimes) and would make me learn and become a better person. So I chose Creative Writing. It turned out to be a great decision and I don’t regret it at all. Despite repeating old lessons, the old lessons repeated the values of creative writing and made me realize that this is something that I actually like doing--not just something I have to do for homework. Through every lesson, I have learned more than just history, an idea or how to write. I learned about myself, and to appreciate my family and to be thankful for what I have.
In Great Neck, we go around with a mindset that we get everything that we want, we all go to great schools and we end up with well-paying jobs with a big family in a nice house. And that’s what I thought too. Until I started traveling with my family to places of all different demographics. From Maine to Florida, from New York to California, and even from home to school, I’ve learned how different everywhere is from each other and how important it is to be unique. Through these trips, I have broadened my horizons--I have encountered many different cultures as well as many different communities. I believe that my vacations have exposed me to all aspects of life; it is easier for me to understand people's perspectives and to be more understanding of them. This will help me both in and out of the classroom--growing up with diverse experiences will help me with future encounters. Growing up with an open mind is important when you are going to school with people that come from a different background than you. I believe by being socially and culturally--my mother was born in Brazil and my father was born in Hong Kong--diverse, I can adapt to my peers' needs and view their perspectives with an open mind.
What really allowed me to open my mind, however, was Creative Writing. And for that Mr. Weinstein, I am forever grateful. This isn’t the ending to my creative writing journey, it’s just the beginning. A new start will open up taking the I-95 south to the University of Maryland, where hopefully, I can allow myself to make lifelong connections and open my creative pores.
