To Grandma

It feels like a lifetime we’ve spent together
Just one person through all sorts of weather
Rain coming down outside the Brooklyn home
I know that you are thinking of me and that I’m not alone

From holidays to birthdays to summer vacations
We originally struggled with our methods of communication
We have literally been through it all
From eating ice cream in Marine Park to breaking a snow globe in Paramus Mall

You inspired me to play the sports I love
Always told me to remember the man up above
To work hard and always be kind
Your integrity and pride are at a level that no one will find

It was always our mutual love and care and affection
That gave us such a special connection
Now that I’m older my appreciation has grown
You provided our family with the bases for our home

The story of your immigration is unimaginable
How you escaped the communists and went to Brasil is simply unfathomable
Here we are so many months ahead
Physically separated but together in our heads

Even though we know how tough times can be
We are always one big happy family
Thanks to one person this is true
Thank you Grandma, I love you!

Splash

The rush of the shot falling in
Is greater than the news that your wife’s bearing kin
The swagger of trotting back down the court
Pumps you up, makes you numb like a coke addict’s snort

When I released the shot from the tips of my fingers
I wasn’t sure how much longer this game would linger
We had been up thirteen we thought we’d shine
But we choked, blew our lead, and went to overtime

Our bodies were aching but our spirit still strong
We rehearsed for this semi-final show way too long
When I missed two free throws to take the lead
The crowd’s roar was in my head like a stampede

We needed a stop, I tapped the floor twice
Told my squad to press 2-3, we needed a steal for our lives
Time was running out, the pass zipped over my head
But it went of bounds, now we could put this to an end

Three seconds, two seconds: I let the shot go
With the flick of the wrist I ended the game as the final whistle did blow
We’d be going to the finals without a doubt
‘’Let's fu**ing go!’’ were the words out of my mouth

A hero for the night, but I had to stay on earth
The next morning I knew I had to put in more work
Back to the gym to shoot some more hoops
Just another positive feedback loop
